Khasi Students' Union seeks protection from encroachers

Khasi Students' Union (KSU) on Friday appealed to chief minister N Biren to protect settlement of the Khasi people in the Jiribam-Tamenglong border, who have been living there for the last many years, from illegal encroachers.
Addressing a press meet at AMSV office here on Saturday, North East Students' Organisation (NESO) secretary general Sinam Prakash said that KSU brought up the report of illegal migrants encroaching on the land of Khasi community settling in the Jiribam-Tamenglong border.
Consequently, the matter was discussed between AMSU and KSU on Friday after which they met chief minister N Biren and apprised the latter about the situation.
They urged the CM to protect the Khasi residents from the illegal encroachers.
On hearing their complaint, the CM asked DC Tamenglong over the phone to take up necessary steps to protect the Khasi residents and evict the illegal encroachers, for which NESO and its component bodies AMSU and KSU are thankful to the.
CM, he said.
Prakash further said that NESO has been working for the united cause of the northeast states while keeping aside the political differences.
It will continue to work for the welfare and protection of the indigenous people of northeast, he added.
Joining the media briefing, KSU Central Executive Council general secretary Donald V Thabah said that the Khasi settlement in Jiribam.-Tamen-glong border dated back to 1939-40.Khedagar Khasi village was the first settlement followed by establishment of Kamrangha Khasi and Abampunji Khasi villages.
These villages remained under Jiribam administration till 1972 but today, they are under Tamenglong district.
The peaceful environment of Khasi villages was disrupted by illegal encroachers in Khedagar village some years back, he said, while drawing attention of the government to protect the Khasi settlement there.
He also thanked the CM for his proactive response to their appeal.
