Boat rallies at Loktak mark World Wetland Day in State

Several civil society organisations including fishermen bodies in Manipur yesterday held boat rallies and resolved that Loktak Lake be saved at any cost and the rights of the fishermen be protected.
While observing the World Wet-Land Day 2014 today, All Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen Union Manipur, AMUCO, CORE, Loktak Lake Fishing Workers Association, All Manipur Thanga People's Welfare Association, CST and CRA organised boat rally around Loktak Lake as well as the normal rally from Thanga Hourem Chingyang Loktak to Ningthoukhong Toubul in Bishenpur district today.

Both the rallies which started from 8:30 am were participated by about 200 boats and 500 people.
A public meeting was later held at Ningthongkhong Community Hall and resolved that Loktak Lake be saved at any cost.
The meeting also resolved to protect and promote the rights of farmers including Loktak Lake fishermen's rights.
Finally, the public demanded that the Manipur Loktak Lake (Protection) Act, 2006 be repealed.
