Discussion on International Law and Human Rights held

Imphal, February 19 2014:
A one-day discussion programme on International Law and Human Rights was jointly organized by United NGOs Mission, Manipur (UNM-M); Longmai (Noney) Bazar Board; Legal Aid Clinic of Longmai and Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) at Noney Bazar Community Hall yesterday.
Conducted in two sessions, one moderated by A Mobi, president of Editor's Guild and the other by Basanta Wareppa, Advocate, Human Rights Alert, discussion covered the issues like law of armed conflicts in the State, AFSPA, Right to Life, violence against women and children and other international human rights.
While speaking on the topic of Right to Life (Article 21 of Indian Constitution) and AFSPA, Majabung Gangmei, social activist said security forces under the shield of AFSPA have been committing various crimes, atrocities and human rights violation on the people of the State and underlined the need for concerted effort to fight and stop such activities of the security forces.
A Mobi noted that media has been enjoying less when it comes to Freedom of Speech and Expression under Article 19 (1) and pointed out that media cannot be used as mouth piece for any organization or department .
He further said media in the State has been working under unfavorable condition with bomb attacks and threats coming from various organizations regarding publication of their press statements.
Basanta Wareppa spoke on International Humanitarian Law and its Applicability to International and Non-International Armed Conflict.
