Training for male weavers begins

Citing that Manipur occupies third place in the country in producing most handloom products with much appreciation from people all around, Minister of Commerce and Industries Govindas Konthoujam has observed that people should invest more effort into the art to make the products even better so that the state's economy can prosper through the industry.
The Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of the "Jacquard Weaving Training to Male Weavers" organized by the Ministry of Textiles, office of the development commissioner for handlooms, Weavers' Service Centre held at Weavers' Service Centre, behind DC office, Porompat, Imphal East here yesterday.
Participated by around 137 male weavers from across various districts of the state, the two months long training programme has been sponsored by the Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur.
Minister Govindas further maintained that the Manipur handloom and handicraft products which is well known all over the country and abroad has reached its present status due to the efforts of the women weavers of the state.
The Minister believes that the state's handloom products will attain the top position in the country ranking provided the men folk also contribute their share of creativity.
As such, he encouraged the men folk to take up this innovative step and contribute to the state's economic prosperity.
The Minister also pointed out that due to the quality and beauty maintained in the handloom products of the state, people from across the country has developed a specific interest in it.
The state has been able to supply products of only around 10,000 meters out of the total 20,000 meters demanded by other states for purchase.
As such, he urged the weavers, both men and women to make more and quality production of the handloom products so that the best of quality goods can be offered.
The inaugural function was also attended by L.Lakher, IAS, Commissioner (Commerce and Industries), Manipur and B.John Tlangtinkhuma, IAS, Directorate of Commerce and Industries, Government of India as president and guest of honour respectively.
