Luira festival comes alive with traditional games

Ukhrul, February 19 2014:
Competition in various traditional events like Virgin dance (Laa Khanganui), Tangkhul open wrestling, tug of war and Raikhangathat (Mock war) marked the third day of Hunphun/Ukhrul Luira (Luingaini), seed sowing festival celebration.
Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Dr SK Chourasia graced the function as the chief guest and Worshang Ningshen, SDO, Ukhrul was the guest of honour.

The two guests were escorted to the venue by womenfolk attired in colourful traditional dress a traditional style.
The chief guest in his speech called for peace and unity to prevail in the district.
The best wrestler in the Tangkhul Open Wrestling competition, Ramreinan Kaping of Awungtang walked away richer with Rs 20,000 while Luiyainao Tang was adjudged the best Virgin dance performer of Luira 2014 .
A total of 11 young girls have walked the ramp vying for the coveted Miss Luira tiara tonight at Mission ground Alungtang, Ukhrul.
A cash incentive of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 will be presented to the title winner, first runner up and second runner up respectively.
