MHA constituted committee begins consultations

New Delhi, February 19 2014:
The committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in the aftermath of the uproar over the death of Arunachal student Nido Tania in New Delhi, began holding consultative meeting with North East youth representatives from February 18 at Nagaland Bhawan.
During the intensive meeting the Committee gathered opinions and suggestions from the NE representatives and it will continue till February 22 .
The panel, which was constituted on February 5, is headed by retired IAS officer M.P Bezbaruah while the members comprise of Retired IAS officers, HWT Syeim, Alemtemshi Jamir, Tape Bagra and P Bharat Singh with S Saha, an official of MHA, as its member Secretary.
The committee later reinstalled on Feb 17 with addition of new members including retired IPS officer and former MP, HT Sangliana; Marina Nido, Chairperson of Arunachal Social Welfare Board and mother of Nido Tania; J Mavio, Vice President, Naga Students' Union, Delhi and JT Tagam, former President, Arunachal Student Union, Delhi.
The ten- member committee is required to submit a report within two months to the Union Home Ministry .
The committee was formed to look into various kinds of discriminations faced by people hailing from North Eastern States and living in different parts of the country.
According to the terms of reference, the committee will examine the kinds of concerns regarding security, causes behind attacks/ violence against the North East people and suggest measures and legal remedies to address the issues / concerns to the government of India.
Member Secretary S Saha told The Sangai Express that the committee will also travel to other metro cities across the country to compile comprehensive issues, concerns and come out with suggestive measures that can be applicable across the country.
He appealed to individuals, CSOs and interested organisations to share thoughts, ideas and suggestions to the committee which could be taken up by the Government on or before February 28 .
