Imphal, October 14 2014:
Annoyed at the government's inaction over the long pending demands of laborers who have been working in FCI godown for the last many years, the CAF & PD Laborers' Welfare Association has imposed a 24-hour bandh along NH 150 (Tiddim Road) and NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam) with effect from October 16 midnight.
However, education; fire services; medical and emergency services will be exempted from the purview of the bandh.
On the other hand, wives of the laborers have also decided not to take part in the ensuing Ningol Chakouba festival as a mark of protest against the failure of the government to address the grievances of the laborers.
Announcing the call of the bandh during a press meet at Manipur Press Club, Romendrajit Moirangcha, secretary of CAF & PD Laborers' Welfare Association said that aggrieved laborers have launched different forms of agitation demanding allotment of works, increase of wages and several others but no positive response has been given by the authorities concerned which is unacceptable.
He lamented that the laborers were replaced by other hired laborers from outside the godown without giving any valid reasons since then families of the laborers have been reeling under financial burden.
Children of the laborers are also compelled to stop schooling ever since works were not allotted to the laborers.
The association has left no option but to come up with the call of the bandh, he added.
Further announcing that the association has also decided to restrict all forms of work in FCI godown from October 18, he cautioned that any untoward incident arises thereof will be the sole responsibility of the individuals who defy the restriction.
