Mass rally staged demanding ST status for Meitei/Meetei people

Large number of people today staged a mass rally here in Imphal demanding Scheduled Tribe status for Meitei/Meetei community under article 342(1) of the Indian Constitution.
The rally began from Thau Ground of Thangmeiband at 10.30 am and concluded at Hatta Kangjeibung of Palace compound by passing through Khuyathong, North AOC, Minuthong Hapta and Checkon.
Various placards with slogan demanding Scheduled Tribe status for protection of the Meitei/Meetei community were carried during the rally.
A Public meeting was also held at Hatta Kangjeibung, Palace Compound.
Media report suggested the number of people to be nearly 10,000 .

The rally was organized by the Co-ordinating Body of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur.
The public meeting held at Hatta Kangjeibung later adopted three resolutions to intensify the demand for inclusion of the meetei/Meitei community to Scheduled Tribe list.
The first resolution said that as the demand for inclusion of the Meitei/Meetei people to ST list under article 342 (1) of the Indian Constitution is supported by various civil society organizations of the state and so the committee decided to intensify the demand.
The second resolution adopted in today's meeting was to urge the government of Manipur to send all relevant documents for inclusion of Meitei/Meetei people to ST status to the Government of India on or before October, 2016.The 3rd resolution adopted was a threat to launch serious form of agitation if the government fails to comply the demand put up by the committee.
