CCpur, September 18 2016:
A heavy bout of rain in the region today briefly inundated several low lying areas of Churachandpur town.
The afternoon downpour lasted for as little as one hour but due to its sheer intensity, at least two streams running along the town overflowed and over inundated several localities.
Along the Chiengkon stream, several houses erected in close proximity with the river evacuated as the overflowing water inundated the houses.
Most parts of Hmar Veng and Kamdou Veng areas were literally submerged by the flood water.
The water, however receded swiftly but the area was filled with mud deposited by the water and residents were seen clearing the mud after the downpour.

Social activist Mangcha Thangzawm has expressed serious concern over the hardship faced by the people of Churachandpur due to flash flood that hit the town Sunday afternoon. Pointing out that today flash flood was not the first such incident, Mangcha Thangzawm stressed the urgent need to engage all stakeholders in combating such calamities.
He said rampant and rather haphazard chopping down of trees is responsible for such disturbances.
In this environmentally sensitive era when challenges like global warming is a threat to the very existence of the green environment, every tree matters.
As such, there is the urgency for public awareness and participation in protecting the environment, and more importantly, a planned strategy.
While also expressing strong concern over the rapid vanishing of green cover, he urged all concerned to plant more trees.
Mangcha Thangzawm also strongly emphasised the need to improve drainage system in Churachandpur so that calamities such as the one that lashed the district are prevented.
