Imphal, May 11 2013 :
RIMS Department of Urology Head Dr S Rajendra has stated that surgical operations for removal of kidney stones would be performed in RIMS regularly.
Prof Rajendra was speaking in the Eastern Zonal-USI Mid-term workshop on Percutaneous Nephrostolithotomy (PCNL) and Prostate Surgery at RIMS operation theatre today under the aegis of RIMS Urology Department.
PCNL surgery is an effective method of removing kidney stones besides reducing cost and recovery period.
Removal of kidney stones by inserting tube or pulverising the stones through PCNL surgery was performed in RIMS some years back but the same operation was put under suspension due to inadequate instruments.
Nevertheless, the same cost effective and reliable surgical operations for removal of kidney stones has resumed today, Prof Rajendra announced.
Problem of presence of stones in kidney has become very common in Manipur.
Commonly, kidney stones are removed by performing key-hole surgery or open surgery.
These surgical operations are very costly when done in private hospitals which means a big burden to patients and their families.
Apart from spending huge amounts in undergoing open surgery for removal of kidney stones in private hospitals, the patients could not work for a long period after undergoing open surgery.
Once PCNL surgery is conducted regularly in RIMS, patients need to buy only medicines, and they would recover within a very short period, Prof Rajendra said.
Talking about prostate surgery, he said that prostate is a male reproductive organ.
When a man crosses 50 years of age, there is a possibility of the organ growing in size leading to constriction of the urinary tract.
Though such case is not very common in Manipur, at least 30 cases are detected in a year in RIMS.
Surgery to remove or reduce the enlarged prostate is being conducted in RIMS since earlier times.
Talking about precautionary measures in order to reduce the cases of presence of stones in kidney, Prof Rajendra advised all vulnerable people to drink at least three litres of water in a day, and also to consume lemon regularly.
The inaugural session of the workshop was graced by RIMS Director Prof S Sekharjit, EZ-USI president Prof Mahendra Singh, EZ-USI secretary Prof Rajesh Tiwari and RIMS Superintendent Prof Ch Arunkumar as presidium members.
Prof Sekharjit stated that re-introduction of PCNL surgery in RIMS would be a big boon to the people of Manipur.
The inaugural session of the workshop, which would conclude tomorrow, featured a live performance of PCNL surgery by Dr SK Paul and Dr MS Agarwal inside RIMS operation theatre.
