Noted writer, lyricist B Jayantakumar passes away

Imphal, April 09 2015 : Renowned Manipuri writer and lyricist Bachaspatimayum Jayantakumar Sharma passed away at the ICU ward of RIMS at around 4.30 pm today due to a personal ailment.

Family sources said that Jayantakumar was admitted at the hospital after he experienced chest pain yesterday morning.

However, after a brief treatment, he was discharged in the afternoon.

The noted lyricist again experienced chest pain in the late evening and he was rushed to RIMS hospital again.

He was put under continuous observation in the ICU ward of the hospital since then.

However, Jayantakumar's condition deteriorated in the afternoon and he passed away at around 4.30 pm.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, three daughters and grandchildren.

All Manipur Matam Ishei Kanglup (AMMIK) general secretary B Netachandra Sharma said that Jayantakumar's demise is a great loss in the field of art and culture.

It would be hard to fill up the void left behind by the late writer, he added.

He also appealed to all the writers, lyricists, artistes and art and culture lovers to attend the last rites of Jayantakumar to be held at his native locality Brahmapur Nahabam Bachaspati Leirak tomorrow.

He also appealed to the general public not to organize any kind of entertainment programmes and musical concerts till Jayantakumar's last rites are performed.

B Jayantakumar Sharma was born on January 14, 1935 at Brahmapur Nahabam Bachaspati Leirak.

He passed matriculation from CC High School in 1953 and completed his graduation from DM College in 1958 .

After completing his studies, he worked as an Assistant Teacher in Adult Night High School at CC High School from 1957 to 1961 .

He joined AIR Gauhati as a staff artiste in 1961 and was promoted to the post of Producer of AIR, Imphal in 1972 .

He had worked as the Assistant Station Director of AIR, Kohima in 1989 and later retired from service in 1991 .

After his retirement from Govt service, he continued writing books, articles, poems, songs and seminar papers.

Apart from writing 26 features for AIR, five radio plays, 1300 songs, he was also a popular live commentator of AIR, Imphal of Ratha Yatra festival held at Palace compound.

Jayantakumar had also composed many popular Manipuri songs and he was the founder member of Roop Raag, Sangeet Mandal, AMMIK, All Manipur Music Association and Writer's Forum, Imphal.

B Jayantakumar was also a life member of MDU, Cultural Forum and Manipur Sahitya Parishad and was also the Advisor of JNMDA, Roop Raag and AMMIK.

He was also a jury member of Film Forum Manipur, External Examiner of Manipur University in the field of Art and Culture and a resource person of SCERT, Manipur.

For his contribution in the field of art and culture, he was honoured with various awards that included Manipur Statehood Award, Best Lyricist in the 2nd Manipur State Film Festival, Writers Forum Award, MDU Ashalata Award for Best Worker, Akasvani Award for exemplary service, Lifetime Achievement Award by AMMIK, Eshei Saktamgee Lamyanba Award, MDU Gambhini award and others.

Some of the books written by B Jayantakumar are 'Nongdon Likla', 'Leikhal Liechal', 'Manipur gi Thouna Phaba�Thouna Phabi Sing Jatakki Seirol' etc.

He had composed and written the songs for the films 'Yairipok Thambalnu', 'Sanamanbi Sanarei', 'Ingalei', 'Yenningtha Amada' and 'Leiyee Ama' etc.

He was also the lyricist of the popular theme song of the 8th Manipur International Polo tournament "Hada Samadon Ayangba", sung by Mangka Mayanglambam.
