Imphal, October 13, 2013:
The Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) today celebrated its 15th foundation day along with a simple commemorative function held at Konjeng Hazari Leikai community hall, Tiddim Road.
As chief guest of the celebration function, Board of Secondary Education Manipur Chairman (IPS) P Dhanakumar Singh regretting that Manipur has been reduced to a place filled with varied problems and miseries, opined that in the pursuit for persevering with the ethnic community and ethnic identity ethos the composite identity of the society is being compromised.
From a peaceful and tolerant society a few decades back Manipur at the present juncture can be described as chaotic and deeply divided, said the Chairman while observing that contractors and other individuals with questionable credentials getting elected as the people's representatives testify that the political class is also losing its identity.
Speaking as the guest of honour, Joint Director of Tribal Research Institute, Imphal Solomon Zingkhai opined that spirit and principle of religious tolerance at the individual level often gets diluted as the collective instinct frequently indicate communal disharmony.
Suggesting that only when there is communal harmony would there be peace and development in Manipur and calling upon all concerned to discard the concept of racial discrimination, the Joint Director also announced that from this year on 'Communal Harmony Peace Award 2013' would be conferred by the Tribal Research Institute.
Renowned social activist Thounaojam Iboyaima in his address proposed that the Government take pro-active measures for human resource development along with according top priority in tapping their talent and potential.
He, however, pointed out that every noble and genuine effort for human resource development would remain elusive and impracticable as long the Government of Manipur cannot prevent imminent loss of its territory to the immediate international and domestic neighbours with apparent reference to the ongoing boundary fencing imbroglio in the Manipur sector of Indo-Myanmar border.
Similarly, talents and commitment of the future generation could not be put to good use if there is no specific policy to protect existing agricultural land in the State, the veteran social activist said.
While Imphal Free Press executive editor Maibam Dhanabir Meetei extolled students and women's bodies for their timely intervention and initiatives to maintain communal harmony in the State, MSF president Longjam Umakanta Meitei highlighted activities and achievement of the students' organisation in diverse sector.
