KPF demands exclusion of Kuki villages from Serou GP

Demanding exclusion of two Kuki villages of Chandel district from the Serou Gram Panchayat of Thoubal district, Kuki People's Forum (KPF) has threatened to impose economic blockade and boycott of Independence Day celebration if the government fails to fulfill demand by August 15. Addressing a press meet at the office of Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) at Sugnu Tribal, Vice President of KPF Hemang contended that inclusion of the two villages in both Chandel and Thoubal district and giving dual voting rights is against the constitution of India.
The state government has been giving special facilities to these two villages in every aspect.
However, villagers of the two villages no longer want to enjoy the dual voting rights and now want to exclude themselves from Serou GP which is under Thoubal district.
General Secretary of Kuki Chiefs' Association (KSA), Gunpi area, John Doujapa, who also attended the press meet, reacted against unauthorised elements involving into the matter and demanded exclusion of the two villages from Serou GP immediately.
He further said that the Kukis with their own customary laws and rich traditions have been a part of the hills of the state since olden times.
The inclusion of K Phailen and S Thingkhangfai, which are part of Chandel District and ADC Chandel to Serou GP is not acceptable.
After the drawing of lots for ST women's slots for Pradhan and Zila Parishad for the Gram Panchayat elections, two Kuki women candidates have filed nominations for Pradhan and one for member.
However, all the three women have withdrawn their nominations after discussing the matter, he informed.
