Two hurt as NPP workers clash with police

Imphal, March 14 2022:
At least two women including a female police constable were injured during a clash that took place between supporters of NPP MLA from Kshetrigao assembly constituency Sheikh Noorul Hassan and police after the latter arrested 11 NPP workers in connection with poll related violence.
Around 12.30 pm Monday, a large number of NPP supporters gathered around Porompat police station and demanded immediate unconditional release of the arrested workers while accusing police of making the arrest without any reason.
Imphal East additional SP Pramesh tried to pacify the protesters but the situation got out of control and police resorted to firing tear gas shells and stun bombs to disperse the crowd.
Protesters also pelted stones towards the police during which one woman police constable sustained injury on her head.
A woman protester also suffered injury after she was hit by a tear gas shell.
Police also detained some of the protesters.
Meanwhile, SP Imphal East M Pradip told media persons that a clash took place between NPP and BJP workers on March 11 when the former were carrying out victory procession and opening fire leading to vandalizing of houses and private properties.
Police controlled the situation before the violence escalated.
However, both sides filed police complaints.
On the next day, police arrested one accused person which led to further arrest of 16 people including 11 of NPP and 5 of BJP.
They will be produced before the district magistrate for further legal actions, he said.
He also informed that 19 protesters were detained during Monday's clash with police.
