Indigenous Games of Northeast to be promoted

Indigenous games of Northeast India will be having its golden days soon, says a statement of MODIfied Northeast India on Tuesday.
Congratulating the athletes from Northeast India, particularly Manipur and Tripura for their spectacular performance at the just concluded Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, a statement issued by Naorem Mohen, Founder of MODIfied Northeast India said the initiative is promoting traditional and indigenous games of the region.
It was a proud moment for every Northeast Indians when Khumukcham Sanjita Devi won the first Gold Medal for the Country on the opening day of Commonwealth Games 2014 in women's weightlifting event, it said while acknowledging the struggles of athletes from the region, who are facing problems and conflicts.
The few games selected for promotion by the initiative include Mukna, Thang-Ta, Sarit Sarak, Kangjei and Cheibi of Manipur; Inbuan and Insuknawr of Mizoram; Naga Wresting of Nagaland; Hinam Turnam of Arunachal Pradesh; Dhopkhel of Assam; Achugwui Phan Sohlaimung of Tripura, according to the statement.
These games are the traditional versions of modern day Wrestling, Judo, Fencing and Kabaddi, it continued.
Large scale competitions and festivals of these traditional games will be organized in the entire Northeast region, it declared, while lamenting that the Northeast India lacks sponsorship, exposure to modern technology and other facilities.
To fill the gap, MODIfied Northeast India is seeking support from from industrialists and companies, it added.
The Initiative has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to facilitate and reward the Commonwealth Games medalists soon.
Meanwhile, MODIfied Northeast India also requested the players not to play the games for the sole purpose of getting government jobs.
Lamenting on the involvement of politicians in sports as one of the factors of withering Sports, Naorem Mohen also requested the Prime Minister Office to end the regime of politics in Indian Sports and to ban the culture of appointing MPs, Ministers and MLAs in Indian Sports bodies or Olympic Associations.
