Imphal, September 22 2015:
United Naga Council (UNC) leaders met Special Secretary (Internal Security), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Ashok Prasad during his visit to Imphal.
During the meeting, the leaders sought the Centre's intervention on the three Bills passed by the Manipur Assembly and which has been "out-rightly rejected" by the tribal communities.
UNC said that the Nagas hardly shared a "common origin and history and also, identity, culture, tradition" with the majority community.
"We have been made a part of Manipur not through the conquest of Meitei Maharajah nor by our consent," the UNC said in a press release.
According to the UNC, the present situation in Churachandpur District was a result of killing 9 innocent civilians including a minor on August 31 and September 1 by the State security forces.
Accusing the Government of Manipur of trying to "suppress, oppress and exploit tribal rights", UNC said the government was also attempting to grab "their land" .
While pointing out that the State forces had used rubber bullets for the valley protestors while live bullets were used against the peaceful loving and democratic tribal protesters in tribal hill areas, UNC asked the Centre to take up all possible steps to expedite the implementation of "Indo-Naga Framework Accord" at the earliest.
