Workshop begins

A two-day State level workshop on 'Violence and crime against women' was initiated today at the conference hall of Tribal Research Institute, Chingmeirong today.
The workshop is being held under the aegis of the Department of Social Welfare, Manipur with an aim to sensitize stakeholders and to develop an insight into the issues of women.
Speaking at the occasion, Deputy Director (WP), Social Welfare Department, Surrender A Shishak said the number of violence and crimes against women in the State have remarkably increased in the past few years.
As such, there arises a need to adopt effective measures to curb the menace.
She encouraged organisations/individuals to hold awareness programmes, workshops and such others as a means to prevent violence before it starts, prevent the recurrence of violence, prevent violence-related trauma, and stop the spread of violence to the next generation or social level.
Violence does not only imply physical violence.
Both physical and emotional trauma fit into the description of violence when applied to violence against women, the Deputy Director stated.
The Department has reached out to credible number of women victims through its varied schemes in the past, she added.
Social Welfare Deputy Director K Jiteshwor Singh and Deputy Director Th Joychandra Singh were also present at the opening event.
Resource persons Premlata Thokchom, Assistant Director, Human Rights Law Network; L Pishak, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Bishnupur; Nonibala Narembam, Secretary, IRDSO, Wangjing and Surrender A Shishak, Deputy Director, (WP), Social Welfare spoke on topics like 'Domestic violence act, 2005', 'Violence and crime against women in the State', 'Women empowerment' and 'Schemes and programmes relating to women' .
