Process on to revive Seri Dept: Gyan Prakash

A two-day cocoon and silk fabrics exhibition cum fair, which is being organised by department of sericulture, has begun from Tuesday at project management complex, Sangaipat.
Inaugurating the exhibition cum fair, commissioner (sericulture) Gyan Prakash said that all the activities taken up by the department in the past were implemented in association with and funding from Central Silk Board.
The Japanese sericulture project had also lapsed and the department has been facing fund constraint after end of the agreement.
Since then, the department has remained almost non functional.
However, the government is in the process of reviving the department by consulting with the finarice department for submitting projects to the Central Silk Board.
The exhibition cum fair is being organised with the objective to revive the existing silk farms and create awareness on the activities taken up by the department, he said.
Gyan Prakash also revealed that the department is consulting with weavers for organising a mega fair in the near future.
Sericulture director Laishram Geetchandra said that cocoon and silk fabrics produced in the state are being displayed and sold in the two-day long event.
It also acts as a platform to inform the public about the scope of sericulture and activities being taken up by the department.
The department has prepared a couple of projects for submission to the Central Silk Board, he said and added that it has also submitted proposal to the government for filling up the required manpower so as to revive the department.
With the ongoing processes, the department is likely to become fully functional with high production rate within a couple of years, he expressed confidence.
