Untimely rainfall hits hard farmers

Highlighting the impact of climate change on farming activities, a farmer of Kumbi Loutombi Loukon and Kumbi Municipal Council former vice chairperson Wahengbam Bobychand Luwang has expressed apprehension of poor harvest this year due the unseasonal rainfall and inundation of paddy fields of at a time when paddy crops are ready for harvest.
Speaking in this regard, Bobychand pointed out that the incessant rainfall since October 23 has caused tremendous inconveniences to the farmers.
Stacks of cut paddy plants awaiting threshing are now submerged under water as the farmlands are filled with water, he conveyed.
Regarding the usual flooding of farmlands located in low lying areas such as Kumbi Loutombi Loukol, he urged agriculture department to look into the matter and frame long lasting policy to mitigate the problems caused by inability to drain out excess water into irrigation canal.
He also appealed for dredging of Kumbi Loutombi Lamyai canal till Khumbi Khuga River after harvesting of paddy is completed.
Meanwhile, Kumbi Loumee Sinmee Apunba Lup president Salam Jayenta Meetei has appealed to farmers growing crops near Lamyai canal to clean up the residues left in the canal while threshing the paddy using threshing machines.
Large quantity of muds on the roads from the wheels of threshing machines and tractors caused problems to school students.
Accidents have also been occurred due to muds on the road in previous years, he recalled, while urging farmers to properly take out the muds from the wheels of threshing machines and tractors before taking to the road.
Jayenta further exhorted Bishnupur district administration to issue order in this regard as preventive measures.
