Emerging social issues discussed

A one-day consultation programme on Emerging Social Issues & the Law was organized by Human Rights Law Network, Manipur at the conference hall of Institute of Co-operative Management (ICM), Lamphelpat here today.
Delivering key note address, advocate L Sivananda Sharma stated that failure of the government to protect lives and properties of people has led to rampant human rights violation and pointed out that volatile law & order situation prevailing in the State has been one of the main factors attributing to various crimes happening every now and then in different parts of the State.
He said that different forms of protest like bandh, strike, blockade etc are major social issues as they affect lives of people in many aspects and added that it is high time for people to gain knowledge and strive for building a good society free from all kind of violence.
While speaking on the topic 'Peoples' Grievance Redressal System in Manipur' as a Resource Person, Wahengbam Joykumar, executive director of Human Rights Initiative (HRI) said that people are deprived of basis rights for lodging complaints on various issues with the authorities concerned not taking up the matter for redressal in time.
He also pointed out that people are finding hard times in seeking legal help ever since Manipur State Human Rights Commission has stopped functioning due to lack of attention from the government.
He stressed on the need for empowering Juvenile Justice Board, Child Welfare Committee and NREGS Ombudsman so as to address grievances faced by the people.
