Curfew on non-locals relaxed, schools to reopen on Monday

Imphal, September 13 2014 : The Students' Wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) has suspended its indefinite curfew imposed on non-locals up to September 19 after an understanding on some points was reportedly brought about between the government and committee during a meeting this evening.

The committee imposed indefinite curfew on non-locals in pursuance of its demands for implementation of Inner Line Permit System in the State, suspension of Addl SP (Traffic) Y Victoria who raided office of the committee beyond her jurisdiction and unconditional release of all members of the committee who were arrested in connection with the ongoing ILP movement.

In the meeting which lasted for around three and half hours, the government side was represented by Chief Minister O Ibobi; Deputy CM Gaikhangam; MLA RK Anand; MLA Dr Ng Bijoy and MLA Dr I Ibohanbi while the Students' Wing was led by Thiyam Naresh, president of AMSU; P Premchandra, general secretary of DESAM; Longjam Sanjoy, vice-president of AIMS; RN Koireng, vice-president of MSF and L Jayentakumar Khuman, president of SUK.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Oinam Nandababu, a member of JCILPS Students' Wing informed that during the meeting, the government representatives gave its assurance that all members of JCLIPS who were arrested by police will be released unconditionally before September 19 .

However, the ongoing protest made for implementation of ILP system would continue in a democratic way, he added.

Further informing that the meeting also discussed the government's decision of declaring indefinite holidays in all educational institutions and it was decided that normal classes will resume from September 15, Nandababu he cautioned that the committee will resort to even more intense agitation if the assurances given were not implemented by the government.

During the meeting, both sides also agreed to put the demand for suspension of Y Victoria as one of the agenda in the coming round of talks.

However, any formal talks on the issue of ILP demand would depend on the response of the Government, he added.

Earlier during the day, a large number of non-locals were brought to the two relief camps set up in Imphal by the police as a precautionary measure against the 'indefinite curfew' imposed by the students' wing of Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS).

Altogether 121 non-locals including two women and their kids were brought to the relief camp set up at Dharamsala, Thangal Bazar here by Imphal West police.

These non-locals who are mostly labourers have been picked up by the police from various places of Imphal West district including Patsoi, Wangoi, Mayang Imphal, Sekmaijing etc.

Apart the relief camp at Dharamsala, another camp set up with the Porompat's DIC office complex in Imphal East district, has accommodated a sizeable number of non-locals picked up from different parts of the district.

Thoubal district administration also opened a Relief Camp to accommodate non-Manipuris staying in Thoubal district at the campus of Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal.

As many as 140 non-Manipuris including 4 women have been given shelter at the relief Camp, according to ADM Thoubal Ksh.
