Imphal, May 10 2014 :
Comprehending more rainfall in the coming days former Keishamthong assembly constituency MLA L Jayantakumar initiated clearance of household wastes and shrubs that had been clogging Waishel Maril (drainage system) from today.
Clogging of Waishel Maril, which flows through several residential pockets of the assembly segment, normally leads of inundation of low laying areas in Keishamthong and adjacent ACs during the monsoons.
supervising the drain clean-up work during which an excavator and two tipper trucks provided by the Imphal Municipal Council were pressed into service, Jayantakumar said flooding of residential areas during rainy season could be averted if objects clogging the drainage system are removed ahead of rainfall.
Noting that hesitancy by many of the residents in sparing even Rs 100 a month as fee for garbage collection and instead dumping household solid wastes into the Waishel Maril has been undermining effort of the Ward Development Committee to keep the AC garbage-free, he observed that rather than natural factors, clogging of the vital drainage system is mainly due to lack of cooperation by the people.
Regretting that absence of proper waste disposal sites has been hampering IMC's initiatives to keep Imphal areas neat and clean, the former MLA said solid wastes dredged out from the Waishel Maril base would be dumped at a suitable site in consultation with youth organisations of Khagempali areas.
