Imphal, May 10 2014 :
Chief Minister Okram Ibobi's conduct of rebuking the forest officials publicly during a recent inspection at Mantripukhri might not be proper, if not outrightly childish; but there is nothing the Government can be proud of the Forest Department.
The incompetency of the State Forest Department is quite evident from unrestrained clearance and burning down of forests along Imphal-Moreh Road (NH-102) at the hillsides of Lokchao and Khudengthabi, probably under Lokchao and Yangoupokpi Wildlife Sanctuary.
|
The burned down forest area at Lokchao roughly covers 2.5 kilometres, while the charred forest area at Khudengthabi is about one kilometre.
Imphal-Moreh Road is an important route of Southeast Asia and it is frequented by high ranking officials of civil, police and military.
However, the authorities concerned are unable to check destruction of vast forest areas along the route.
Moreover, the forest officials have remained silent over the matter.
They are not even enquiring whether the burned down forest areas fall under the jurisdiction of Lokchao and Yangoupokpi Wildlife Sanctuary or not.
