Imphal, March 14 2022:
Including caretaker chief minister N Biren, 59 newly-elected members of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly were administered the oath of office and secrecy by protein speaker S Rajen at the Assembly Hall here on Monday.
The assembly will have 20 new faces, including four women.
Pro-tem speaker Rajen administered the oath from 11am onwards by convening a special session of the assembly.
Commencing the special session, Manipur Legislative Assembly secretary K Meghajit read out the order issued by the Governor appointing Sorokhaibam Rajen, who has been elected from Lamsang AC, as pro-tem speaker, who then administered oath of office and secrecy to all the elected MLAs one-by-one based on serial number of constituencies.
While responding to a query raised by media persons just after the end of oath taking ceremony, N Biren Singh said that majority of the MLAs elected this time are social activists, educated and disciplined people and hence expects cordial sessions in the assembly.
Success of five women candidates in the just concluded election is akin to success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao slogan and women empowerment, Biren said.
According to Biren, the new government to be formed by BJP need to follow certain rules and national observers will be coming to the state as per party's norms and accordingly appoint the leader of the house.
He then informed media persons that national observers will be arriving in the state at the earliest.
The ceremony continued for about one hour and forty minutes.
Out of the 60 elected MLAs in the 12th Manipur Assembly, 23 are new faces and five are women, which is the highest ever in the history of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Biren said, "I'm privileged and honoured to have sworn in as a Member of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly at the Assembly Hall in Imphal today".
The ruling BJP retained power for the second consecutive term and for the first time in Manipur the saffron party got the absolute majority on its own by winning 32 seats in the 60-member house.
Elections were held on February 28 and March 5 and the results declared on March 10.BJP's erstwhile ally National People's Party secured seven seats while Janata Dal (United) won six seats, the Congress and the Naga People Front bagged five seats each, Kuki People's Alliance, a newly floated tribal based party, managed two seats and three Independent candidates also got elected to the Assembly.
Of the five women members, three are BJP legislators and two elected on NPP ticket.
The NPF, JD (U) and an independent member announced to support the BJP government.
Biren Singh had on Friday resigned from his post and the Governor asked him to continue in his office until the new government takes charge.
There is no confirmation yet as to when the next chief minister would be chosen, or when the new BJP-led government would assume office.
Before the elections, the BJP had informally declared that Biren Singh will be the party's chief ministerial face and will head the next government.
The oath-taking ceremony was also attended by chief secretary Rajesh Kumar, DGP P Doungel, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba among other state officials.
