Landslide kills 3 Railway workers, many hurt

Imphal, July 19 2021:
Three workers engaged in culvert construction work near bridge number 69 of the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railways succumbed when a landslide buried them at a place located about 15 km north from Nungba PS, Noney district on Monday around 2:50 pm.
According to a police report, the workers engaged in Triveni Company, which is engaged in construction work for the NFR project between Khongshang and Thingou villages under Nungba PS, were carrying out culvert construction work when the sudden landslide buried them beneath mounds of earth and mud.
Several others workers were also injured in the incident but the precise number of the injured could not be ascertained.
A rescue operation was quickly launched to save the workers trapped beneath the debris of mud and slime, but the rescuers managed to retrieve only the lifeless body of one worker by the time of filing this report.
The deceased workers have been identified as Kartik Mon-dal (46), s/o Bonbihari Mondal from Nabonari Tala in West Bengal; Munu Rabha (21), s/o Chandra Kanta Rabha; and Deep Rabha (18), s/o Ghana Kant Rabha from Uttar Barbil, in Assam.
It may be mentioned here that frequent landslides and mudslides have been occurring in Noney and Tamenglong districts as a result of heavy rainfall.
The volumes of rives namely Ijei, Irang, Barak, Makru and Leimatak is increasing at an alarming rate and flowing at the danger mark.
