Imphal, May 12 2010:
Troops of 31 Assam Rifles have reportedly gunned down a suspected UG cadre in a gun-fight that broke out near Indo-Myanmar border Pillar No.81, in late night yesterday.
A PRO IGAR (S) release said the AR troops observed suspicious movement of 3-4 heavily armed unidentified persons close of the international boundary at around 11 pm.
On being challenged, the UG suspects opened heavy volume of indiscriminate firing which was immediate retaliated resulting in elimination of one person.
The release said that one AK-47 rifle along with a magazine containing one live round, 18 fired cartridge case and a personal diary were recovered from the slain person.
A police source said the deceased person likely to be in the mid-20s, has cropped hair, ears pierced and attired in combat uniform.
The body has been handed over to Imphal police authorities by the Assam Rifles and subsequently deposited at RIMS morgue today.
Meanwhile, Imphal West district police commandos have arrested a UPPK activist from Chongtham Kona Awang Leikai at about 4.30 am yesterday.
A statement of SSP (IW) identified the captive as RK Tombi alias Inao alias Brojen (41) s/o (L) RK Sanahal of Chongtham kona
Awang Leikai.
RK Tombi reportedly revealed of joining UPPK in 2006 under one S/S Sgt Maj Khaiba, was arrested by commandos of Thoubal and Imphal East in 2006 and 2008 respectively and that he was assigned to extort money from the general public and businessmen for party fund.
One 9 mm pistol loaded with three live rounds and one miss-fired ammunition of 9 mm were recovered from his possession, the statement added.
Another statement of the SSP said district police commandos and 28 Assam Rifles apprehended a PREPAK activist from Kyamgei Mamang Leikai at about 11 am today.
He has been identified as L/cpl (Army No.24794) Laishram Suraj alias Tomba alias Langon Meitei (19) s/o (L) L narshing Meitei of Kumbi Laingangtabi Awang Leikai.
