Walkathon staged to 'Save Gadai' in Tamenglong

Tamenglong, June 04 2012:
In connection with World Environment Day, the district level organizing committee today organized walkathon for elderly persons.
Despite heavy rainfall in the morning, the spirits of the walkathon participants were not dampened.
It started off as early as 6:00 am in the morning.
Around 100 elderly people turned up to participate in the event and spread the message of 'Save Gadai' .
After being flagged off by Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong C Arthur W, IAS from Mini stadium Tamenglong, the walkathon passed through the Main Market before winding up at Jadonang Park.
Guiliangliu Malangmei, an 89 years old lady was the oldest among the female participants while Chuiluangamang (87) of Chuiluan among the male participants.

In spite of their old age, both of them covered the entire distance.
Nelemang of Chaengdai village (chest No.376) bagged the 1st position, Mathuiri (chest no 244) of Model village Tamenglong Ward No.III bagged the second position and T.P Adim (chest no.221) of Tamenglong Ward No.III bagged the third position.
Consolation prizes were also given to five other participants.
Prior to the walkathon, the organizing Committee visited all the Wards of Tamenglong District to talk to the people about the event and to encourage participation.
"Our Forest is depleting continuously and will do so in the next few decades if we don't act now.
With the increase in population every year, we should conserve our forest and plant more trees.
This cannot be achieved without public cooperation.
Finding the right model for long-term plan to prevent deforestation in Gadai Forest range has also become more urgent," said Dr.Chambo.
Volunteers were spotted briefing the passersby and onlookers about the 'Save Gadai' campaign and why it is important.
Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong C Arthur W said it was nice to see the response of the elderly persons in such a campaign.
"We were afraid that the rain this morning would affect our attendance, but I'm very happy to see so many people turning up to support the cause", said T.K.Simte, SDO Tamenglong.
All in all, it was a lively event, not just for the elderly people but also for the people who had come to see the event.
5th June, World environment Day will bring the curtain down on the week-long activities.
