Considering the problems being faced by the people of the state, Kuki State Demand Committee has decided to relax their agitation of imposing economic blockade and closing down of government offices in Kuki inhabited areas of Manipur, which was scheduled to be launched from May 15 to 19 .
Speaking to media persons at D Phailen under Churachandpur district, K Khongsai, Spokesperson of Kuki State Demand Committee informed that the demand for a separate Kukiu state was raised by the Kuki National Assembly (KNA) in 1960.A memorandum in the regard was also handed over to the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru by the Kuki leaders.
He stated that the long pending demand of the Kukis is meant to bring about a political solution to the Kuki issue.
The demand can also be compared to the demands of the Mizos in Mizoram and the Nagas in Nagaland.
There is a long history of the Kukis which clearly indicated that the Kukis were independent people right from the start.
Their forefathers also fought against the British to retain their independence.
K Khongsai further asserted that the Government of India should give in to the demands of the Kukis considering the role that Kukis played in the freedom struggle of the state.
Though late, the Kukis will surely get their demands, he expressed optimism.
