Education Minister makes tall promise
'Gun culture to be replaced by education culture'

Imphal, May 15 2012:
Assuring that public would start seeing changes in the existing education system of the state within six months; Education Minister Moirangthem Oken has categorically observed that he would have no regret in handing over the portfolio of education to someone who can accomplish the task if he fails.
Speaking at the occasion of felicitating the toppers of various examinations including Civil Service examination, State Board and Council examinations, 2011-2012 during a function organised by Institute of Rural Education (IRE) Group of Institutes, Wanging at its auditorium today, Minister Oken said that if he cannot bring about changes in the education system within the stipulated six months, he would have no regret in relinquishing the portfolio in favour of someone who can accomplish the task.
The Minister also announced that steps would be taken up to identify meritorious students belonging to economically weaker families for extending financial assistance starting from matriculation.
Promising to replace the prevailing gun culture by education culture, the Minister also appealed to all concerned to stop looking at education department as a place for contract works.
Expressing happiness over many candidates from Manipur clearing the Civil Service Examination conducted by UPSC as well as other all India competitive examinations like NDA, Minister Oken observed that these are good sign.
To encourage more candidates for giving their best in such examinations, the state Cabinet had also recently given its approval to providing Rs 2 lakh incentive to successful candidates of NDA and UPSC exams.
Minister of Social Welfare AK Mirabai, MLA of Khangabok A/C O Landhoni, MLA of Wangjing Tentha A/C P Brojen and Founder and incumbent President of IRE N Ibtombi were also among those who were present and spoke at the function.
