NIA to probe Nepali women trafficking case

Imphal, April 25 2022:
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) would be revisiting the 2019 human trafficking case in which Manipur police rescued 147 Nepali women and 32 men from Imphal and Moreh while they were being taken to Myanmar.
An NIA official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, informed that trafficking of women, mostly Nepali for flesh trade, after being taken on the pretext of employing them as domestic helps in South East and South West Asian countries is a widely known issue in the region.
In 2019, Manipur police rescued 179 Nepali including 147 women and handed them over to Nepal Embassy.
NIA has started collection of relevant materials and evidences of the case.
The agency had also filed a case against one Nepali citizen named Rajiv Sharma in this regard after he was arrested while trying to traffic 40 Nepali women into Myanmar through Moreh.
Apart from this particular case, NIA will conduct investigation into similar incidents concerning cross border human trafficking, the official revealed.
The officer further informed that they have also arrested another Nepali citizen named Asha Kaji Lama Tamang and rescued some women from Moreh.
Asha is being questioned to trace the network of human trafficking, which is active in Manipur, Delhi and Nepal, the officer added.
