Poppy cultivation worth ` 3.6 crores destroyed

A joint team of NCB, Imphal, 39 Assam Rifles, Customs Division (Imphal), NAB (Manipur), Churachandpur police and AMADA destroyed around 300 acres of illicit Poppy cultivation in Thinghat and areas adjoining Myanmar in Churachandpur district during a drive from January 9 to 11. The drive was conducted under the supervision of Regional Director, Narcotics Control Bureau, Imphal.
The approximate value of the destroyed illicit Poppy plants in the black market has been estimated at around Rs 3.6 crores.
The team also destroyed around 750 acres of illicit Poppy cultivation in Churachandpur district during first week of January, 2012 valued at Rs 9 crores.
During last year 2011, the team destroyed 904 acres of illicit Poppy cultivation in Manipur valued at Rs 10.84 crores.
It is said that NCB unit has got information regarding illegal cultivation of Poppy plants in different locations of hill areas in Manipur and the unit along with other law enforcing agencies and NGOs are committed to destroy all these illegal Poppy cultivations in Manipur during the season in order to root out the drug menace from the surface of Manipur.
The Regional Director has appealed to the public to give information to NCB about illegal cultivation of Poppy plants in their knowledge.
The Narcotics Control Bureau also has a policy of giving rewards to the officers who participated in destruction of illicit Poppy cultivation and informers who give specific information, a statement of the Unit informed.
