Imphal, May 24 2009:
The Communist Party of India (CPI) has on Sunday insisted the Secular progressive Front (SPF) through a representation to convene a steering committee meeting.
The development comes close on the heels of the reports that the CPI may be dropped by the Congress from the SPF and the CPI Minister Ph Parijat likely to be ejected from his ministerial post.
According sources, the CPI Executive Committee meeting has discussed at length the political trend and the development in Manipur around 8 this morning at the Irabot Bhawan here.
The meeting took note that the SPF has not been formed by the CPI to get ministerial berth.
But the SPF was formed way back in 2002 by three political parties including the MSCP, CPI and the Congress when the Congress with only 20 MLAs was short of MLAs to form a government.
It also noted that the government was formed in the SPF name.
Sources also said that the meeting felt unhappiness over the observation that the CPI adhering to the Congress for the sake of one ministerial berth and asserted that the CPI is not supporting for the sake of one ministerial post.It also said that the CPI feels childlike to just announce its decision to end support to the Congress and as such it is insisting the SPF Chairman, O Ibobi, who is also the Chief Minister to convene the steering committee meeting, the source further said.
Though the SPF Chairman Ibobi declined to convene a meeting of the SPF for the last two years due to some reasons, he is bound to convene the meeting this time as it is pressed in pursuance of the party decision, it added.
The Congress can snub ties with the CPI during the meeting and the CPI will gladly accept the decision of the meeting, the source added further.
The CPI missive urging the SPF Chairman to convene the meeting, signed by the party's secretary, was handed over to the Chief Minsiter O Ibobi personally by the party leader Sotinkumar this evening around 2 .
