Imphal, November 09 2009:
The Government of Manipur is planning to launch newspapers both in English and Manipuri against the backdrop of individual and firm owned newspapers not covering government-related news.
Feeling that government news has not been disseminated properly to the public, the state cabinet has approved of the launching of newspapers both in English and Manipuri editions.
This decision was said to be taken against the backdrop of individual and firm owned newspapers boycotting government news in protest against the assault of two journalists recently.
The cabinet was also said to have deliberated upon the launching of government owned satellite news channel.
The Directorate of Information and Public Relations department has been entrusted to prepare the Detail Project Report (DPR) for the launching of newspapers and satellite news channel.
The government has also decided to establish separate building for the installation of printing machines and newspaper office near the DIPR complex located at Moirangkhom.
The DIPR will not be related to the proposed government publication in any way, according to the source.
The DPR has also included the recruitment of 67 editorial staff editors and reporters, for the government publication.
The editors and reporters would be recruited on contract basis.
Most of the staff would be selected from experienced journalists.
The source added that the newspapers and satellite news channel would be launched at the earliest after discussing the TPR at a cabinet meeting.
