Kakching, November 09 2009:
Normal life was thrown out of gear in Chandel district due to the 24-hour general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Kuki Chiefs' Association (KCA), Thadou Students' Association (TSA) and Thadou Tribe Council (TTC), Chandel district demanding the removal of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Chandel Autonomous District Council, S Wurngam Anal.
Other than report of strike supporters smashing the headlight and windshields of some vehicles, no major strike-related violence, however, was reported.
Strike supporters have blocked the Imphal-Moreh road and Imphal-Chandel road at Pallel.
Speaking to this correspondent, a JAC member said, the democratic form of agitations would be launched further until the demand for the removal of the CEO of Chandel ADC is achieved.
He alleged the CEO of practicing nepotism and being communal in the recently held exams for recruitment of teachers under ADC.
Saying that the CEO, S Wurngam Anal is a controversial figure, who has been alleged of entering into service though fake certificate, the member demanded the government to replace him immediately.
A spokesman of the Thadou Students' Association (TSA), Chandel district told this correspondent that 15 schools out of 46 schools in Chandel district that were under the domination of Thadou-Kuki speaking tribe have been paralysed due to shortage of teachers.
He further noted that only 21 teachers from the Thadou-Kuki tribe have been appointed as teachers out of 245 teachers appointed in Chandel district from the period 1993-2006 .
This kind of discriminatory and bias attitude has angered the population.
Demanding the government to immediately transfer the incumbent CEO, the TSA spokesman further demanded fair, just and unbiased recruitment of teachers in the district.
