Imphal, July 05 2012:
Even as the State Police, Narcotics, Excise and many other civil society organisations have been trying their level best to combat the menace of various intoxicants like Heroine, cannabis, Spasmo Proxyvon capsules, N-10 and other similar psychoactive substances which contain amphetamine, of late a new menace created by the infamous WY (World's Yours) tablet has begun to haunt the people of Manipur, specially the youths.
Suspected to be manufactured mainly in Myanmar and bordering Thailand in different colours, the menace of the small tablets came to light when a 17-year old Myanmarese was arrested by the Customs Preventive Force posted at Moreh on July 3.The Custom officials recovered as many as 1,434 pieces of the WY tablets from the Myanmarese national identified as Bihalu.
Even though, police have recovered similar tablets in the past, the most recent seizure of a large consignment has forced the people of the state to worry over the new menace, which might prove dangerous in the already chaotic society of Manipur.
The WY tablets are used as intoxicant and the users feel so much energy within 20 minutes of consuming them that they started taking interest in everything.
An addicted user who consumes five to 10 tablets of WY a day can run, jump or do any tiresome works without any feeling of tiredness for two whole days and that too without even a nap.
As it increased the strength and confidence of its users, crimes may also increase at a faster rate in the society which would be hard to control.
Moreover, the WY tablets have a fame of creating ecstasy to its users which increased the mating power of the user humans.
And in turn, it might also increase the incident of rape and sexual crimes in the society.
Once addicted, users could hardly give up the habit of consuming this drug which will pose a major threat in the future of the society.
WY is a tablet containing a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine.
It is typically produced in a round pill form.
They are brightly colored in red, orange or lime green and carry logos such as "R" or "WY" .
They are small and round, roughly 6 mm in diameter.
It is believed that Myanmar is the largest producer of methamphetamines in the world, with the majority of WY tablets found in Thailand smuggled in from neighbouring Myanmar, particularly in the Golden Triangle and Northeastern Shan State, which borders Thailand, Laos and China.
It is said that immediate feelings after consuming the tablet are of light-headedness (and potentially dizziness), followed by euphoria, increased physical activity, heightened alertness and increased wakefulness as a result of the central nervous system being affected.
After several hours, the user experiences the come-down and feels decreased appetite, increased respiration and hypothermia.
Post come-down effects include irritability, insomnia, confusion, tremors, convulsions, anxiety, paranoia, and aggressiveness.
Other reported symptoms also include lower back pain, possibly from damage to the liver or kidneys.
While many countries have banned selling of this tablet and its kind, Manipur is facing the menace for the first time.
In such a situation, the state government should consider the threat at high level, ban the tablet and take up measures to curb the new menace from before it got rooted.
