Imphal, March 28 2016:
With a view to improve technical education in the State, the State Cabinet has resolved to set up Manipur State Technical University.
Starting from 3 pm, the State Cabinet held a meeting today at the Chief Minister's Secretariat with Chief Minister O Ibobi in the chair.
Briefing media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Government spokesman M Okendro informed that the proposed technical university would have its headquarters at Imphal.
The proposed university should be set up after the Manipur State Technical University Bill 2016 is introduced and the same is passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
However, as there will be no Assembly session in the coming days, the university would be set up under an ordinance with due approval of the Governor in view of the growing need for such a university, Okendro stated.
The State Government would soon approach the Governor for enforcing an ordinance under which the technical university would be set up.
Informing that an ordinance generally remains effective for six months, the Government spokesman assured that all efforts would be invested to introduce a Bill for establishment of the university before the six months' period expires.
For the moment, all the money required for establishment of the technical university would be borne by the State Government.
Nonetheless, necessary arrangements would be made to obtain funds from NEC, NLCPR and the Central Government from time to time.
The maiden session of the technical university would be commenced from July this year in some portions of the building earlier occupied by NIT Manipur at Government Polytechnic, Takyel before the university's permanent campus is constructed at a suitable site.
The State Government would prepare a DPR and try to obtain fund required for construction of the technical university's administrative block from the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Establishment of a technical university would enable students pursue higher technical education courses like BE, B Tech, M Tech etc within the State rather than going outside the State speding huge money, Okendro who is also CAf&PD Minister added.
