Imphal, April 07 2021:
As a result of enhanced number of LPG connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yoajana (PMUY), the State quota for kerosene (fuel) has been reduced by the Centre, said an official of the Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Department.
The Centre has allocated 2,496 kilolitres of kerosene for three months, April, May and June.
For April to March 2022, the total allocated quantity is 9,984, which is much lesser than quota allocated in the previous years.
It may be mentioned that kerosene is included as a PDS (Public Distribution System) item and is provided to NFSA (National Food Security Act) card holders through fair price shops.
A litre of kerosene is sold at Rs 36 at the fair price shops, said the official.
On the other hand, an official of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) said the price of the kerosene has been revised and a litre would now cost Rs 35.02 .
This includes GST (Goods and Services Tax), transportation and other taxes/charges.
Meanwhile, sources said the CAF&PD Department should check the prices of the commodities at the fair price shops and other outlets to control price hike.
Like other items, kerosene should be sold at the price fixed by the CAF&PD Department.
While the price of the kerosene, fixed by the Department is Rs 36.02 per litre, it is being sold at Rs 45 (per litre) at the fair price shops, the sources said.
If this is the case, then the black marketeers and the fair price shops are earning a considerable amount of money by hiking the price of the fuel.
The allocated quantity of kerosene for April 2021 to March 2022 is 9,984 kilolitres, which is 99,84,000 litres.
If a litre costs Rs 36, then the amount recovered for a year worth of the fuel (April to March) is Rs 35,94,24,000 .
When the price is hiked and the same is sold at Rs 45 per litre, then the total amount recovered is Rs 44,92,80,000 .
This indicates that if the fuel is sold at Rs 45 per litre, then the public would be losing Rs 8,98,56,000 .
