Imphal, August 28 2026: The Opposition Congress party has asserted that Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand who has failed to protect lives and properties of innocent people must step down.

Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today, MPCC general secretary Dr Soraisam Manaoton asserted that there is no point in having a Government if it cannot protect innocent people and their properties.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has been ruling the State in a very docile manner without any authority.

At the same time, the Government seems to be partial towards a particular community, he said.

Given the incumbent Government's abject failure to protect lives and properties of innocent people, there is nothing citizens can expect from the Government, Manaoton said.

He said that the Congress party condemned in the strongest terms the killing of four innocent Liangmai people in a deadly attack carried out by suspected Kuki militants along IT Road on August 27, 2026 .

Contrary to the people's expectation that the Khemchand Government will bring peace and normalcy in the State, the violence has only escalated with Nagas too drawn into the protracted conflict, the MPCC general secretary said.

After Khemchand was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Manipur, the State has been witnessing a series of violent clashes and killings including the killing of two toddlers at Tronglaobi, killing of several Thadou leaders, murder of six Liangmai civilians and the latest killing of four liangmai civilians, Manaoton said.

He added that the Government is still unable to deliver justice to any of these merciless killings.

Violence has been raging and escalating in the hill areas and many innocent people have been killed.

The Chief Minister ought to take moral responsibility for the loss of innocent lives and step down, he added.
