Imphal, August 28 2026:
The 14 CSOs Kangleipak has exuded confidence that the census exercise will be put off in Manipur ahead of the State Assembly session.
An eight-member team of the 14 CSOs Kangleipak were at Delhi from August 20 urging Central leaders to defer census operations in Manipur.
The team came back today.
Speaking to media persons at Imphal Airport, 14 CSOs Kangleipak convenor Shanta Nahakpam said that they met intelligence officials, top security officers and key politicians including the BJP National president, and urged them not to carry out any census exercise until the NRC is updated.
The response given by those leaders and officials indicated that the census exercise will be deferred and this deferment may be announced before the Assembly session, Shanta said.
Notably, the State Assembly session commences from September 2 .
On the demand for updating the NRC, there is a need for wider consultation among the Government of India, State Government and all stakeholders, Shanta said.
It demands a minute study to distinguish indigenous people, permanent residents and immigrants who came to Manipur later, he said.
"The incumbent Chief Minister, the ex-Chief Minister and a team of MLAs led by the Home Minister came to Delhi and we talked with them.
We put in collective efforts to realise the people's demand", he further said.
