Lifer for murder convict

Maibam Manojkumar, District and Session Judge Imphal West sentenced a convict to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, after the sentence hearing today.
The convict Ngangbam Premjit (28) s/o Ng Ibobi of Khurkhul Makha Leikai was produced before the Court from judicial custody for the sentence hearing of the case.
He was convicted under 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for murdering his wife, Latabi Devi on March 2, 2013 at around 2 pm.
The Court heard A Nilachandra, Additional PP of the State and Advocate S Chitaranjan, the defense counsel of convict.
The APP submitted that the convict had committed the murder of his own wife by strangulation but there are no other materials to show that he had committed any other crime and as such prayed for awarding imprisonment for life along with fine.
On the other hand, the defense counsel of the convict contended that as per section 302 IPC, the punishment is either life imprisonment or death sentence and prayed for life sentence as the APP has also prayed for life imprisonment.
As such, the Court sentence the convict Ngangbam Premjit to rigorous imprisonment for life along with a fine of Rs 10,000.The Court also directed the fine amount be deducted from the remuneration or otherwise earned by the convict/ accused while serving his sentence and for the deducted amount to be deposited before the Court every year till the realization of the entire fine amount.
The Court also recommended providing victim compensation scheme under section 357 A of the code of criminal procedure to the only surviving family members of the victim, her brother Yumlembam Sanhanba of Khurkhul Awang Leikai.
