AMSU intervenes, tension extinguished

Following reports of a violent clash between of two groups of students of the Imphal Valley Academy located at Ghari on August 5, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) convened a meeting with school authorities, teachers, and guardians today at AMSU HQ to bring an end to the tension which led to scores of injuries.
After the meeting convened by the student body, Secretary General, AMSU Manjit Sarangthem while addressing media persons said the two groups of students laid waste destroying school property after a violent fight broke out following an incident of bullying by a handful of students against a student who belonged to another group at the morning assembly session.
In the unfortunate incident five students sustained serious injuries leading to hospitalization of several of them, he added.
The meeting agreed over certain points that such incidents should be prevented by the school authority at any cost and any student found repeating such incidents in future, they should be terminated from the school, he added.
The meeting also agreed to provide financial assistance by school authorities to bear medical expenses of the injured students.
Concrete steps to prevent such bullying and violent incidents in the school campus should be taken up the school authorities, Manjit said.
Due to the negligence from the hostel warden, the unfortunate incident had happened.
The hostel warden should be terminated, he added.
Further he said that students lack moral character and discipline.
To check such hazardous attitudes among student communities, AMSU will launch campaigns to create awareness on moral values.
The student body is also set to monitor hostels and boarding school, he said and added that parents should also take a pro-active role in teaching moral values and good behaviour.
