Imphal, August 14 2014 :
Against the backdrop of intense protests launched by students, the authority of Manipur University has decided not to implement the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 in the university from the current academic session.
A decision to this effect was arrived at during a meeting of Academic Council of Manipur University convened this evening.
The meeting was attended by around 80 members.
However, all the members unanimously agreed in principle to implement the same Act from the next year.
Sources said the issue of implementing the Act which would affect changes in seat reservation in admission to various Master courses was not featured in the meeting of the Academic Council held on April 24 last.
That meeting only discussed about admission fee, hostel fee and other matters related with the admission.
Today's meeting also resolved to allow hostellers who were evacuated from the university hostels following a notice issued by the university's Registrar to let them come back from August 16 morning.
The meeting, which was also attended by Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Dean, Professors and Associate Professors of the university also decided to resume normal classes in the university from August 19, sources informed.
It may be mentioned that Manipur University Schedule Caste Students' Union and OBC students have been protesting against the decision to implement the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 which grants higher number of seats to ST candidates in admission to various Master courses.
