Imphal, August 14 2014 :
One taxi (Tata Winger) driver has been allegedly abducted by some unidentified armed persons in connection with a monetary demand.
Speaking to media persons at their MG Avenue office this afternoon, All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union secretary (organisation) M Anil Meitei said that Tata Winger driver Konthoujam Deban (42) s/o Bisoy of Thing-khanphai operating along Imphal-Churachandpur route under Tiddim Road Transport Cooperative Society Limited was abducted by some unidentified persons together with his vehicle yesterday afternoon.
Deban told the time-keeper that he would go for the return trip to Lamka at 2.30 pm and left Keishampat parking.
As the clock struck 2.30, the time-keeper rang up Deban but it was picked up by one of his abductors.
The abductors demanded the transport society to pay Rs seven lakh.
On being enquired if any UG group was behind the abduction, the abductor brushed aside the question saying that it would be let known after payment of the ransom amount, Anil conveyed.
In case Deban is not freed by tomorrow, all kinds of passenger services would be suspended along Tiddim Road from 5 am of August 16 till 5 pm of the same day.
The transporters are also preparing to launch similar protest agitation on National Highways too, he added.
Pointing out that a driver and his assistant were freed only a couple of days back after they were abducted from Piphema, Nagaland and held in captivity for around 20 days, Anil strongly condemned abduction of drivers for ransom.
He also urgied for safe release of Deban.
