Imphal, August 14 2014 :
The driver of a Tata Winger plying along Imphal-Churachandpur road on passenger service was reportedly abducted by suspected armed cadres of a Kuki underground outfit for a ransom amount of Rs 7 lakh from Keishampat Parking here on August 13 at around 2.30 pm.
The abducted driver has been identified as Konthoujam Devan (42) s/o K Bijoy of Thingkhangphai village, Churachandpur district.
Addressing a press meet in this connection at the office of All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' & Motor Workers' Union at Thangal Bazar here today, M Anil, organizing secretary of the Union said that the Tata Winger bearing registration no MN 06L-6311 was registered under Tiddim Bus Owners Transport Co-operative Society Limited.
He informed that the abduction of the driver was known only after time-keeper of the parking made a call to his mobile number around 2.30 pm as a man claiming to be a cadre of a Kuki UG outfit told that Devan has been kidnapped and demanded a sum of Rs 7 lakh for securing his safe release.
However, the man refused to claim to which Kuki UG outfit he belongs to, Anil added.
Taking strong exception to the abduction, the Union cautioned that the passenger services in the State will be ceased from 5 am of August 16 to 5 am of August 17 if the driver is not released unconditionally within August 15 .
