Imphal, April 10:
Contrary to the state Government yet to decide on the raising the service superannuation age of college teachers to 62 years, the University Grant Commission is informed to have issued guidelines recently to authorities of Manipur University and Principals of higher educational institutions of the State regarding the UGC's decision to re-employ teachers upto the personal age of 65, said a release of All Manipur College Teachers' Association (AMCTA).
Confiding that copies of the UGC guideline are in the possession of MU Registrar and the Principals, AMCTA said detailed information are being enclosed in the UGC document regarding condition/reason for re-employment of retired teachers.
reasons cited in the document included ban on fresh recruitment, fund scarcity and insufficiency in the number of qualified teachers that consequently resulted in erosion of the teachers' strength and quality education throughout the country, the Association conveyed while ruing that inspite of such glaring facts Government of Manipur is unwilling to consider raising the age limit.
Further opining that in the context of Manipur, the Government's inconsiderate attitude and approach on the age increment issue implementing the UGC policy of re-employment is very remote, AMCTA cautioned that lethargy to act in the right perspective would not only lead to steady decline in the number of requisite Government college teachers but also result in gradual decay in the quality of education in these institutions.
Informing that representatives of the Association handed over model copies of the UGC guidelines to the Chief Minister and Education Minister today, the AMCTA release also prevailed upon the Government to take appropriate measures for increasing the age to 62 and process with immediate effect for implementation of the UGC policy.
