While authorities concerned in the State of Tripura had registered cases under the Customs Act 1962 and relevant provision of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in connection with the seizure of ganja and other illegal items seized from Agartala Airport recently Postal and Customs officials here are reportedly awaiting official confirmation from their Tripura counter-parts.
With the case under the Customs Act 1962 concerns seizure of animal skins, foreign shoes and cigarettes from a Kolkata bound Air india cargo flight at Agartala Airport on April 8, the same under NDPS Act covers the ganja consignment, said informed source.
The contraband items originating from Manipur were seized following a tip-off to customs Department whose sleuths conducted a swift raid and recovered the illegal items contained in 178 boxes and six postal bags.
While the source revealed that the illegal items were booked by speed post under different names at imphal Post office and ferried through the cargo section of the same, Superintendent of post of Imphal head Post Office kumar today maintained, "Through news reports we have learnt that about the matter but we haven't received any official information from Agartala Postal authorities".
The Superintendent nevertheless asserted that on getting official intimation from the higher ups the matter would be inquired and any employees found involved in the illegal transportation would be penalised.
With similar condition hampering official action by the Customs authorities against the guilty persons, an official of the Customs Department on condition of anonymity said 'we will take necessary action after getting official intimation on the matter'.
