Imphal, April 10:
Even though it has been more than 60 years since India become independent, people of Manipur are yet to taste the real meaning of freedom, stated MPCC president Gaikhangam.
Gaikhangam was speaking at a block level Congress conference organised by the Naoriya Pakhanglakpa Block Congress at Indira Gandhi memorial hall, Mekola Bazar today.
While conceding that many development projects and schemes could not be executed completely in the State due to the volatile law and order situation and impediments from different quarters, the MPCC president claimed that the State Government has been putting its best efforts to bring equitable development in the hills and valley.
Stating that Indian National Congress is the oldest political party of the country, Gaikhangam conveyed the Centre's instruction to the States to inform the people about the welfare programmes taken up by the UPA Government for each State and also for the country as a whole.
He said that the Right to Information was envisaged and materialised by the UPA Government to enable the people know about Government policies and programmes.
Gaikhangam also appealed to the people to make judicious use of the RTI Act.
Unlike previous Governments, the UPA Government led by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi has succeeded in extending equal development opportunities to all parts of the country in an unprecedented manner, claimed the MPCC president.
By introducing the NREGS under which 100 days jobs are guaranteed to every villager, the Government has been able to ameliorate the economic condition of both the hills and valley, he asserted.
Lok Sabha MP Dr T Meinya said that the UPA Government has waived off bank loans owed to small farmers.
Moreover, in its next sitting, the Parliament will discuss the ways and means to reduce the burden of loans indebted to farmers from big money lenders.
Among others, the conference was attended by many Congress MLAs and officials.
