A one day awareness programme on promotion of powerloom weaving in Manipur was held today at the conference hall of Sericulture Department at Sangaipat.
The programme was organized by Department of Commerce & Industries was graced by O Nabakishwar, Principle Secretary, Commerce & Industry as chief guest and Bharat Chajjer, Chairman of Powerloom Dev.
and Export Promotion Council, Mumbai as president.
Director of Sericulture, G Simte, Director of Commerce & Industry, V Tualthang and North East Coordinator of Powerloom Dev.
and Export Promotion Council, Ranjima Barua were guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion as functional president Bharat Chajjer said that 70% of all products produced in the textile industry comes from the powerloom sector.
As such the development of the textile industry depends entirely on the powerloom sector.
It is the lifeline sector of textile industry in India.
Over and above this the powerloom sector is the second largest employer in the country.
The handloom products of the NE is in great demand not only in other states of the country but throughout the world.
But unfortunately due to the limitations of handlooms it cannot meet the demands.
This problem will be eased with the introduction of powerlooms, he said.
Highlighting the various welfare schemes instituted for the weavers he said that the weavers can enjoy the benefit of group insurance schemes and housing schemes exclusively meant for them.
He further went on to say that the importance of powerloom introduction in the state is to meet the local demands and at the same time go for exports too.
He encourages the youth to be a part of this sector.
"If youths don't turn up then the future of this industry is at stake" he said.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, O Nabakishore said that a textile park is likely to be set up in Loitang Khunnou to boost up the production of textiles in the state.
The NE Industrial Investment Promotion Policy 2007 is giving 30% capital investment subsidy to weavers who are willing to invest money on plants and machinery, he said.
Ranjima Barua stressed on the point to form a committee of the NE states so that they can keep in touch with each other and work in this particular sector.
The workshop was attended by various entrepreneurs and weavers of the state.
