Khuga canal caves in, again

The eastern canal of Khuga Multipurpose Project which was inaugurated by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi breached again at a spot about 6 kms from the dam on Saturday last.
Lalhmingthang, a resident of Ngurte and a farmer along the canal said the canal breached even as many farmers of the area were mulling to strengthen the bank
with sandbags.
"We had requested the IFC department to release water for irrigating our paddy fields and accordingly they made a periodical release since mid-June.
We had privately even hired a JCB to clear a portion that blocked the flow of water at Daijang village", he said narrating the even before the canal breached.
"After detecting that the floor of the canal have sunk in the area that breached on Saturday, we have requested the IFC department to go slow on releasing the water and planned a mass social work for Monday but before we could do anything the canal caved-in", he added.

Measuring about 40 ft in length the breached canal this time around have fortunately avoided destruction.
The water overflowing from it has flooded a pond but it is said that it was an unattended one.
