Imphal, July 20 2011:
Standing crops nearing maturation and spread across three thousand Paris have been destroyed by flood at Poirompat and Khuman Loukon in Andro Assembly Constituency.
The flood was caused by the recent downpour as well as the unfinished work of the right main canal of Thoubal dam.
Apart from this, the overflowing water from the canal has also caused immense loss to at least 20 houses at Sinam village apart from flooding numerous fish farms.
Following the havoc caused by the flood water, meira paibis and club members of five localities held a joint meeting and later presented their case to the local MLA, Th Shyamkumar.
After being briefed of the situation as well as on being told of the urgent need to dig a canal for Kumanpat, the MLA has initiated efforts to clear the water ways on a war footing and requisitioned an excavator too.
Speaking to newsmen on the sideline of the canal clearing work, the MLA said that since Thoubal dam is yet to be completed, there is no way for the excess water to drain off.
As suggested by the people, steps to dig the Kumanpat canal have been taken up, he added.
If the canal is made operational then at least the problem of water logging and flood will be solved by at least 80 percent, he expressed and added that the canal digging work will go on till late into the night.
